PYLONS
The truss and trellis architecture of electrical pylons are a recurring sight in the open landscapes of the metropolis. Supporting high tension cables conducting 225,000 - 400,000 volts of electricity, the monumental scale of these transmission towers corresponds to the equally monumental influence electrification has had in shaping both the physical terrain and the cultural landscape of the Marseille – Provence region.
Pylons are most often seen at a distance from a highway or rail line. Crossing the regional electrical transmission network at over 50 points, the GR 2013 provides many opportunities for a closer look at the anatomy and typology of these iconic industrial structures.
